209/365 – A walk in the city

One of my colleagues took us on a little tour of a few blocks around the office building we’re working from.  We walked around quite a bit of the financial district in Johannesburg, and it was fascinating walking with Jason because he knows quite a bit about the history of the buildings.

This is the first time that I’ve really noticed how much gorgeous Art Deco architecture actually exists in the CBD.  And I just love the way that some of the old beauties exist next to glass towers.

One of the first place we went was to the Guildhall Pub. It’s the oldest pub in Johannesburg and opened in 1888. Such character in there!

This is the building, the National Bank Building, that we’re working in for the next few days. It’s one of the oldest buildings in Johannesburg and was opened around 1902-ish. I really really wish I had a wider angle lens to take a better photo of it. The greenish dome is on top of the corner of the building, and is copper (hence the green). I took that photo from the balcony at the top. What fascinated me was in the inside of parts of the building… we went around the bottom floor of the one part, and it’s more than impressive with the art deco mixed with older styles and all the marble and gilt etc… it’s such a pity they didn’t let me take any photos of it.
\

The best part of the walk was when we stopped outside the Rand Club to admire the stunning building, and as we were commenting on the columns and the detail at the top, we were stopped by a guy watching us and he asked us what we were doing. We told him, and we had a discussion about the architecture of the building. He told us that the building there now was built in 1904 (it’s the third building that has been on that site), and it’s all art deco in styling. That surprised me, because I thought it was a mixture with the art deco styles columns, yet for some reason I thought the top of the building was pre-art deco (but then again I’m no architect). He also told us that it was designed by the same architect that designed the National Bank Building which we are working in!! How cool!

Just before he got in his car, I asked him how he knew… turns out he’s the Chairman of the Rand Club!! LOL!

I would love to have seen the inside of the building, but we were completely inappropriately dressed for the place:)

It was an awesome experience being a tourist in my own city.  Loved it!! Made me realise what a special place it is, and it made me hope that this revitalisation of the CBD just goes from strength to strength… because those old beauties deserve to be restored to their former glory.

I just love the contrasts in this city… old Johannesburg has got so much soul… with this beautiful district and the mining district and the more funky Newtown… compared to the almost heartless Sandton.

What a stunning pictures. I love Art Deco architecture just like you, but have never been to Johannesburg. It looks like a really beautiful city to visit.

Absolutely stunning.

Lovely! I never appreciated the buildings ‘in the old days’ on my fast walks (during my lunch hour) to the city centre where the grand old shops were .. and they were ‘grand’. Hoping the revitalization continues to restore them to their former glory.

Hi Jeanette!! Wow these really are beautiful photo’s of Jozi – I think living in this city we often look past the beautiful details that you have captured!

I enjoyed looking at all these photo’s of the old buildings. It makes me proud to be a Joburger :-)

Absolutely beautiful pictures of beautiful buildings. We are involved in revitalization of quite a few buildings over the last few years (and at present) and it is truly amazing to see some of these come to life. We were even involved in a project that won a Halala award in 2008. http://juggelingactoflife.blogspot.com/2008/06/halala.html

I’m so jealous ! Those are beautiful and I’ve been planning to get into the CBD for a while after our Ethiopian experiance to get some more shots there.

Maria - August 5, 2010 - 5:52 am

These are gorgeous! I have always loved the Jhb CDB. Like you say it has some amazing buildings. Agree the revitalization is so important. I like the area around main street in the afternoons. Also driving on the highway past the city at night is always a treat for me. Love the way you captures the beauty of the buildings! I always stare out the sunroof at the tops of the buildings when stopped at a light etc in town – not great from a “being aware” perspective – but so good to get a sense of the majestic beauty of those buildings! Ok, enough – but I really do love the city and your photos!

208/365 – Johannesburg CBD from above

I worked from an empty office in the middle of Johannesburg CBD today, with the rest of the team on the project I’m working on.  The office is on the 7th floor of a heritage building, in fact, one of the oldest office buildings in Johannesburg.  It is stunning, with parquet flooring and exposed brick walls and sash windows.   I would love to use a space like that as a studio… it’s just gorgeous.  I’m definitely taking more photos of the building itself tomorrow, but today I took quite a few from our vantage point up high.

Isn’t the facade of the building gorgeous?  This part is underneath the dome that is on the corner of the building.

The middle of the buildings fascinate me.

How gorgeous are these art deco lift lights?

Oh and the stairs… love the worn stairs. Can you see the dip in the middle?  This staircase leads up to a roof balcony where hundreds and hundreds of smokers must’ve congregated over the last 100 or so years.

And what’s a day in the CBD without a quick lunchtime protest.  Not sure what they were protesting against.

…yes, we worked quite late this evening…

A couple of great photos to show off your allround ability. I love the indented stairs, but the evening one is my fav.

Avril (Mom) (23 comments.) - August 4, 2010 - 6:58 am

Looks nice from up there .. not so nice on ground level! And to think I used to walk those streets every lunch time – 5 blocks – in high heels (!) to get the shopping area in the centre … EVERY day !

cat@juggling act (218 comments.) - August 3, 2010 - 9:46 pm

These are stunning! We have done redevelopment on quite a few buildings in JHB (and PTA) inner cities. Some of them have the most amazing details.

203/365 – A detour up the hill

The traffic was insane this evening and I didn’t go my normal route home; AND I knew I was going to be too late to walk the dogs; AND the sun looked amazing, AND the sky was all murky… all those factors convinced me to take a small detour up Northcliff Hill before the sun set.

I have been wanting to get up there for months, to see if it was still gated, and whether I’d be able to do a shoot there.

I wasn’t disappointed… it’s stunning up there… although I didn’t feel safe enough wandering about on my own when the sun really got low… and in fact I missed the most amazing sunset because of my fear.  Anyhoo, I got some amazing photos anyway… and I’m going to go back… with someone in tow though.

Lovely pics. Have some wonderful memories of that place. If you need a a safe and open vantage point for both the city and Sandton, let me know. World’s View has some great options. Would love to see what you can do with it at night and dawn/dusk.

YOU make Joburg GREAT

There have been a few of these signs floating around Johannesburg lately, and they’re now causing people to talk!

I got an email from the organisers of the campaign a few days ago explaining all about the campaign and asking if I wanted to get involved, because they’d noticed the photos of Joburgers on my site.  Of course I said YES!   I love living in this city. And I love the people here too!

This quote comes from the Facebook group that has been set up called “You Make Joburg Great” and it sums up everything about the campaign.

“Joburg definitely deals with its fair share of flack. “Why would you want to live in Joburg?” Yes it might not have a mountain. It might not have a beach. It might not have a 1000 year old museum or cathedral. But it does have something better than any other city in South Africa…

The people.

The most awesome people in South Africa and quite possibly the world.

The people in Joburg rock. Properly rock. They drive the economy. They work hard and play even harder. They are generally friendly, vibrant and cosmopolitan. They are F&*%ING awesome!

And those people are YOU.

YOU MAKE JOBURG GREAT.”

The campaign is basically all about growing the goodwill in the city, and they’re hoping that people use these banners all over the place and spread the word. Well, the talking is certainly happening.

During this week, the numbers of people on the corner of Sandton Drive and William Nicol with sign grew daily, and the vibe was just incredible when I stopped to take photos today.  There was music blaring from a truck, people were dancing, drivers of cars were hooting and the people carrying the signs were screaming and shouting.  It was hugely festive!

I took the first photo from the car as we were going past, but I told Lance he had to stop so I could get more shots.

From the car

These 2 were dancing around to the music, and I overheard the one lady say that she could start the day like this every day!

Dancing in the traffic

Signing the traffic#

Shouting at the cars

Making joburg great

guy in traffic

I was in SUCH a good mood by the time I got back to the car:)

And people in the office were talking the whole day about what they’d seen that morning in the traffic, so it’s clearly making an impression.  Apparently they’ll be at different intersections next week, but you can organise the signs for anything you need it for too!

I also see that there’s a photographic competition running to take photos with these signs with very cool prizes… the details are HERE

Jayde Fouche - November 9, 2009 - 1:41 pm

Jeanette these photo’s are fabulous!! I remember seeing you drive past and take the photo…and what a brilliant photo it was! You’re pictures really catch us all in the moment and making Joburg Great! you ROCK!! :)

Bat Mitzvah celebration at the Shul

I was honoured to be asked by the family of one of the 6 girls who had their Bat Mitzvah yesterday at the Pine Street Shul to be the official photographer for the event.  I have linked to an article about the ceremony above, but basically it’s a celebration of a girl’s “coming of age”. I thoroughly enjoyed the morning at the Shul, and the girls were so much fun and it was just an amazing event to be a part of… so very special.

It was the first Bat Mitzvah that I’d been to, and thankfully had attended one of their rehearsals the week before so that I could meet their “Batty” teacher,  Dalya, and find out all the rules of the Shul.

It started really early in the morning with portrait sessions with all the girls and their families.

Natasha very proudly told me that her hair band was made by her family member that was visiting from Israel:)

We all then moved into the Shul for the ceremony but managed to get a few more shots of the girls before it all started.

Having some fun

The only photo that the Shul requested, was this one with the girls and Rabbi Gerson and Dalya

Bnot Mitzvah

And then it began…  The girls had long speeches prepared where they talked about the things they’d learnt in the last year of Dalya’s teachings.  It was very interesting for me as it was all about their culture and traditions.

The girls

Thato speaking

And then the choir sang about the women’s role in the Friday traditions

This was my favourite part of the ceremony, where the girls got blessed by their mother’s.

The Rabbi addressing the girls and their families and friends

The girls all got presented with certificates from the Shul and the United Hebrew Schools

And then it was celebration and singing time!  Mazel tov to all the girls and their families:)

After the ceremony, I took photos at the Druker family’s lunch celebrations, and those photos are coming tomorrow evening.

Cheryl – no significance in the colour purple. The girls I had my batmitzvah with wore white and peach (back in the early 90′s ;) )

Jackie - October 20, 2009 - 9:38 am

These are stunning!!

Cheryl - October 20, 2009 - 9:34 am

Is there any religious significance in the girls all wearing the same colour of purple? Lovely photo’s.

Wenchy - October 20, 2009 - 8:42 am

These came out beautifully!

Annie (29 comments.) - October 20, 2009 - 8:25 am

Wow, these are amazing shots. You have a gift for capturing special moments. I am sure these girls are going to treasure these.

Janet B - October 20, 2009 - 7:59 am

What a special occasion! Lovely photographs J – perfect memories for the girls and their parents. Looking forward to seeing the lunch ones tomorrow!

Gina (58 comments.) - October 20, 2009 - 7:20 am

So so beautiful. Love the one of Lori being blessed by her mom.

Angel – A bar mitzva is slightly different, The shul part is held on a Saturday morning which is the sabbath and therefor you cannot do any ‘work’ such as taking photographs etc… very religious people wont even drive. The day is meant to be spent in prayer and relaxation from the bible “and on the 7th day he rested”…

Angel (192 comments.) - October 20, 2009 - 7:10 am

Shoowee, it seems every shul is different…
My friend’s son’s bar mitzvah is this December, but they’re doing all their photos the Thursday before the actual ceremony because they’re not supposed to take photos during.
Great shots Jenty!
