209/365 – A walk in the city

One of my colleagues took us on a little tour of a few blocks around the office building we’re working from.  We walked around quite a bit of the financial district in Johannesburg, and it was fascinating walking with Jason because he knows quite a bit about the history of the buildings.

This is the first time that I’ve really noticed how much gorgeous Art Deco architecture actually exists in the CBD.  And I just love the way that some of the old beauties exist next to glass towers.

One of the first place we went was to the Guildhall Pub. It’s the oldest pub in Johannesburg and opened in 1888. Such character in there!

This is the building, the National Bank Building, that we’re working in for the next few days. It’s one of the oldest buildings in Johannesburg and was opened around 1902-ish. I really really wish I had a wider angle lens to take a better photo of it. The greenish dome is on top of the corner of the building, and is copper (hence the green). I took that photo from the balcony at the top. What fascinated me was in the inside of parts of the building… we went around the bottom floor of the one part, and it’s more than impressive with the art deco mixed with older styles and all the marble and gilt etc… it’s such a pity they didn’t let me take any photos of it.
\

The best part of the walk was when we stopped outside the Rand Club to admire the stunning building, and as we were commenting on the columns and the detail at the top, we were stopped by a guy watching us and he asked us what we were doing. We told him, and we had a discussion about the architecture of the building. He told us that the building there now was built in 1904 (it’s the third building that has been on that site), and it’s all art deco in styling. That surprised me, because I thought it was a mixture with the art deco styles columns, yet for some reason I thought the top of the building was pre-art deco (but then again I’m no architect). He also told us that it was designed by the same architect that designed the National Bank Building which we are working in!! How cool!

Just before he got in his car, I asked him how he knew… turns out he’s the Chairman of the Rand Club!! LOL!

I would love to have seen the inside of the building, but we were completely inappropriately dressed for the place:)

It was an awesome experience being a tourist in my own city.  Loved it!! Made me realise what a special place it is, and it made me hope that this revitalisation of the CBD just goes from strength to strength… because those old beauties deserve to be restored to their former glory.

I just love the contrasts in this city… old Johannesburg has got so much soul… with this beautiful district and the mining district and the more funky Newtown… compared to the almost heartless Sandton.

What a stunning pictures. I love Art Deco architecture just like you, but have never been to Johannesburg. It looks like a really beautiful city to visit.

Absolutely stunning.

Avril (Mom) (23 comments.) - August 5, 2010 - 3:03 pm

Lovely! I never appreciated the buildings ‘in the old days’ on my fast walks (during my lunch hour) to the city centre where the grand old shops were .. and they were ‘grand’. Hoping the revitalization continues to restore them to their former glory.

Amanda (2 comments.) - August 5, 2010 - 1:15 pm

Hi Jeanette!! Wow these really are beautiful photo’s of Jozi – I think living in this city we often look past the beautiful details that you have captured!

Fiona - August 5, 2010 - 11:41 am

I enjoyed looking at all these photo’s of the old buildings. It makes me proud to be a Joburger :-)

Absolutely beautiful pictures of beautiful buildings. We are involved in revitalization of quite a few buildings over the last few years (and at present) and it is truly amazing to see some of these come to life. We were even involved in a project that won a Halala award in 2008. http://juggelingactoflife.blogspot.com/2008/06/halala.html

I’m so jealous ! Those are beautiful and I’ve been planning to get into the CBD for a while after our Ethiopian experiance to get some more shots there.

Maria - August 5, 2010 - 5:52 am

These are gorgeous! I have always loved the Jhb CDB. Like you say it has some amazing buildings. Agree the revitalization is so important. I like the area around main street in the afternoons. Also driving on the highway past the city at night is always a treat for me. Love the way you captures the beauty of the buildings! I always stare out the sunroof at the tops of the buildings when stopped at a light etc in town – not great from a “being aware” perspective – but so good to get a sense of the majestic beauty of those buildings! Ok, enough – but I really do love the city and your photos!

Trash the Dress in Newtown with Fiona

It was actually great having two people for our Newtown Trash the Dress photoshoot with 2 very different styles of dresses, as it allowed me to take very different photos in the same setting.  Here are my favourite photos of Fiona from the afternoon.

This was the closest that we got to having a “groom”:)

And that’s now the last of the Trash the Dress photos that I’m going to post.  I LOVE doing shoots like this, and hope to do another one really soon!

Newtown on a Sunday morning

I met up with a whole lot of tweeters in Newtown this morning for a photowalk, and I really enjoyed it.  We didn’t get to really spend time in Newtown during the Worldwide photowalk a few weeks ago, and I’ve always wanted to walk around there, so this was an ideal opportunity.  I learnt a lot in the process about functions on my camera that I never knew existed, and I was in awe of some of the equipment that some of the guys were carrying.

First up, I have to show you my favourite shot of the day… taken right at the very end of the walk…

While you sleep

These painted silhouettes on the steps outside the Market Theatre were so very cool!

Painted steps

Some public water fountains next to the Theatre

Angled taps

I tried to push myself on this walk and take photos of things I normally pass by… as you can see there are almost no people shots! Next time though, I’m definitely not going to forget my tripod and triggers for my flash so I can try some strobist stuff like the other guys were doing!

So, after last week’s beach theme for my Weekly Winners post, this week is ALL urban!  Hope you enjoyed it;)

Worldwide photowalk in Johannesburg – Part 2

I was going to split the photos from yesterday’s photowalk into 3 posts, but I’m too impatient;)so this is a HUGE post!!   These are my favourite shots from yesterday, I liked the others I posted… but I love these!

I’m posting them in the order in which they were taking.

This church is an Anglican church in Braamfontein, on the same block as Wits University (where the walk started).

Church door

Light up the church

Cross

We walked over the Nelson Mandela bridge into the Johannesburg CBD to get to Newtown.  These are the cables on the bridge.

Mandela Bridge cables

This is taken from the bridge.

Train yard

A Malawian guy we met on the bridge…

Sunglassed Malawian

Once we got to Newtown, we steered clear of the crowds that had gathered to celebrate Mandela’s birthday (hence all the flags).

Stop gap

Hole in the wall

broken window

This guy was a street vendor in Newtown selling posters

smoking

We’d spent so much time on the bridge, that by this time we had to make our way back, and we walked along a busy street with shebeens on every block, to get back to the main road to get back to Braamfontein.

This yellow building was actually a butchery.

Yellow 1901

Flagged pocket

Then we came across this group of kids that were dancing and singing on a street corner.  It was definitely the highlight of my day…it was also then, that I realised just how fast my new camera is! Love it!!  I took so many photos of these kids, here are just a few…

girl dancing

Boy in action

boy doing high kick

backup singers

Little warrior

I wish we could have stayed there for longer, but it was getting late.  We passed a taxi rank before we crossed the Queen Elizabeth bridge back into Braamfontein, and I just HAD to stop and ask this man whether I could take a photo of him.  These makeshift barbers are all over the city, and I’ve been dying to take a photo of one… I know… I’m strange:)

Taxi rank barber

And what’s a trip to the city without spotting a little crime… these guys were sitting under the bridge stripping copper wire that they’d probably stolen… blissfully unaware that I wasn’t taking photos of the city scapes like the other photographers

Stripping wire

And the last photo… of the trains under the Mandela bridge.

Train yard and Mandela bridge

It was a fabulous experience, and I actually want to go back to the city to “do” Newtown properly. These are definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, my weekly winners for Lotus’ weekly challenge.

My biggest problem now, is singling out my one image that I can submit to the photowalk site for prizes. LOL! Impossible task!

Worldwide photowalk in Johannesburg – Part 1

The second Worldwide Photowalk organised by Scott Kelby took place today in 900 cities across the world. As soon as I saw that the registrations had opened a few months ago (I follow his blog), I signed up for the Johannesburg walk. There were 27000 photographers in 900 cities that registered for the event.

It was a blast! There were 100 photographers that registered for 2 Johannesburg walks.  We all met at Wits University in Braamfontein, and walked over the Nelson Mandela bridge into Newtown.  My only regret, is spending too much time on the bridge, as I would have loved to have spent more time in Newtown and the Johannesburg CBD.

As you can imagine, I’ve taken stacks of photos, so I’m splitting my blog posts over a few days.  In case you’re interested, I used my new Canon 50D, and I primarily used my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens, and some of the shots were taken with my Sigma 70-300mm lens.
