I now have a softbox, so I had to play with it when I got home tonight. I still don’t have a second flash though (I’m getting it later on this week), but I like the light (even with the shadows), and I can’t believe the difference the softbox makes! Connor managed to stand still, with much coercing, for 2 seconds while I took the photos.

So, now I can really do maternity studio shoots on location (in your home) without worrying about light. And I’m properly kitted to do the corporate portrait shoot that I’ve been booked for next week too (without borrowing equipment)!
Let me try and simply explain what I’ve bought for those who asked a few times on other posts lately. This method of photography is called Strobism. You use flashes that you normally connect to the top of the camera, and instead, use transmitters to remotely fire them when the camera fires. You buy connectors that connect the flash to stands and then you can get specially adapted boxes and diffusers to fit onto the flashes to make the light softer.
Because you’re using flashes, the equipment is generally lighter and smaller which makes it very mobile, and easy to set up on location. So, while I don’t have a full studio setup, I can now set one up in anyone’s home or business without much hassle! In fact, I can also easily fly with it, which is what I did a few weeks ago when I flew to Durban and Cape Town for a corporate shoot.
