126/365 – A school Mother’s Day assembly

There was a Mothers Day assembly at the school yesterday morning, and of course, I had to be there because I knew Bradley would be singing for the moms.  The school does this every year, but this year it seemed to be a little more organised with tea vouchers and bookmarks for the moms.

I, however, didn’t get one of those! You see, I’m not at home in the afternoons like Lance is, so he does Bradley’s homework.  He only told me about the assembly on Thursday night.

Bradley also didn’t tell me about it, and in fact, assumed that because I’m always so busy and hardly at home, that I wouldn’t be able to attend.  So he told his teacher that I wouldn’t be there.  Imagine how I felt when I found this out on Thursday.

Then Bradley got upset, because he thought that I now wouldn’t go because of what he’d told his teacher. Silly boy!! Of course I would have made a plan:)  So anyhoo, I got to watch the whole thing… but didn’t get my tea… but no matter, I was there for the important bit:)

It’s quite an event actually, with the choirs and drama teams singing and reciting poems with the intent to make all the moms cry… which they duly did.  And the most impressive part of these events is the way they manage to get ALL the kids in the entire school singing and dancing on the field.

Note the lack of school uniforms… it was football friday… all the kids are encouraged to wear soccer 2010 t-shirts and jeans.  But as you can also see, there aren’t many of those because there’s a shortage of kids ones and when you find them they’re like hugely expensive which is insane for a shirt a child will wear for 6 months!

Kev’s school is doing jeans and soccer shirts on Fridays.

41/365 – In front of peers

Lance and I got invited to the school assembly this morning because Bradley received a merit badge.  This is the weekly merit that the school gives out.  I love this policy actually, because it’s so inclusive.  Every child has a chance to get the merit badge once in the year.  It gets announced in assembly in front of all their peers with the reason they’re getting it.  It could be for school work, or friendship or picking up litter… or in Bradley’s case because of school work and because he’s so kind to classmates (the story is on my other blog)

Always a proud moment to see your child up on stage. They all look very dashing in their uniform.

25/365 – Learning to write

Bradley’s Grade 1 homework has started.  Thankfully it’s easy enough for him to do it while I’m cooking supper.  It doesn’t take that long either, the teachers don’t like them doing homework for more than 15 minutes a day.

And in fact today, he stayed at home because he has a sinus infection causing fevers etc… but he still had to do his homework when I got home:)

I have actually never thought of taking piocs of Dylan doing homework.

Fiona - January 27, 2010 - 10:16 am

I love how you’ve shot and edited this pic Jeanette. We are finding that Ethan’s Grade 2 homework is less than last years. His homework would sometimes take up to 45 minutes so I’m hoping they decided it was too much and brought it down for this year.

Fairy Girl (27 comments.) - January 27, 2010 - 9:36 am

Joshua is also home today with a fever, poor thing. I complained non stop last year because the kids received so much homework, I don’t think this year is gonna be any better :( Fortunately he is old enough to do most of it on his own.

ExMi (24 comments.) - January 27, 2010 - 9:17 am

i remember doing all those exercises while at school….i’m kinda miff that they don’t teach kids cursive any more – although as soon as we were allowed to, i switched to regular writing – much better – but cursive is still a nice skill to have :)

cat@juggling act (187 comments.) - January 27, 2010 - 8:47 am

Lovely picture! I hope he feels better soon. And look how neatly he writes.

Janet B (48 comments.) - January 27, 2010 - 7:57 am

Glad they don’t overload them with homework. 15 minutes a day is more than enough. It was quite a bone of contention with the inspectors when I was teaching 100 years ago! They didn’t agree with overloading the kids at all whereas a lot of teachers did! They still need time to play and be children – after all, their school career is a long one!

Girish (77 comments.) - January 27, 2010 - 5:17 am

Homework :s Very boring I remember. :D

Nice photograph.

Good boy Bradley Bear .. that’s nice and neat !

12/365 – Bradley starts Grade 1

It was the chaotic first day of school today, because every single school in the country started on the same day because of the World Cup this year, and Bradley started Grade 1.

It wasn’t such a big move for him, as the Grade 0′s and 1′s in his school are in the same block and the only difference is really the uniform.  OK, not quite the same, because it seems the teachers have moved the kids around quite a bit so they’re not in the same classes as their old friends.

When I asked Bradley this evening whether he had new friends in his class, his answer was “yes… 24! And then there’s me!”  LOL, I think he misunderstood.  I then asked him if he had played with his new friends today, and his answer was yes.  But then when I asked him who he’d played with at break… it was the usual suspects who are no longer in his class. At least he’s not phased about being split from his old friends:)

My little big boy now has to wear a blazer!! And a cap!! But thankfully only on assembly days:)

Doesn’t he look so smart?

Connor thought so too, so he was quizzing Bradley on the make-up of the blazer this morning before we all traipsed off to school.

If you want to see what I looked like when I was in Grade 1, I’ve posted a story on my other blog with a photo because of a challenge from Female2Female.

Oh wow, what a handsome first grader you have! He just looks adorable!

Alet (34 comments.) - January 15, 2010 - 8:59 am

I can imagine having to buy a blazer when your son is so little is frustrating, but he looks so handsome with it! I sl pleased that Bradley enjoyed his first day!

I could see the picture of you on your first day on my reader! You looked so cute!

Janet B - January 14, 2010 - 8:05 am

He looks ever so smart! Makes me feel a bit nostalgic – his blazer is exactly the same as Christian Brothers College – I can just see my bother with his blazer and cap on 39 years ago! :)

Fiona - January 14, 2010 - 7:46 am

He looks so smart in his blazer Jeanette! They are growing up so quickly…I remember Bradley, Josh and Ethan were so teensy when we met and now look ~ they are all in school wearing uniforms :)

Colleen Sevitz (6 comments.) - January 14, 2010 - 6:16 am

So handsome and grownup looking, where as the years gone? Good luck for Grade 1 Bradley, no doubt you will do just as well. Odette starts her first day of High School on 3rd February.

Wow he looks so grown up! Good Luck Bradley for your first year in ‘big’ school.

D Hani Creche in Doornkop Soweto

I’ve really had quite a run of charity work lately.  This is the last for this year though.  A colleague told us about this creche in Soweto that was started by an amazing lady, and as a result of what we found out about it, we also collected toys and clothes for this school.  I went with 2 of my colleagues to deliver the goods and see the place for ourselves.  My car was so full of stuff, and the roads were so very bad that I actually almost rolled the car on the way to the school.  But anyhoo, that’s enough of me, this lady’s story is incredible!

Nthabiseng

I’m going to give you a quick recap of Nthabiseng’s history, because the whole story, especially the details of the abuse is too terrible to repeat on my blog.

Mme Dimpho (as she’s known in the area) was one of 3 children.  Her parents died when they were young and they lived in aunts and uncles home cleaning and cooking for them until her brother was old enough to look after them.  She never went to school.  He made her marry someone when she was 15 and she had 3 kids. She eventually got a job as a cleaner in Rand Mutual hospital and then started training as a nurse, until the hospital closed down when the mine closed.

One day she was at home, when a man came to her house with a baby who was very hot.  She tried to bring the fever down, but it didn’t work.  Eventually she took the child to Baragwanath where the doctors examined the 9 month old and discovered that she had been sexually abused.  The baby eventually died from her injuries and the father of the baby was never found.

That incident made Nthabiseng decide to start a daycare instead of just sitting around the house waiting for a job.

The daycare centre is in the area where she lived.  It’s in a low-cost housing and shack dwellers area called Doornkop which is on the West side of Soweto.  The centre cares for 130 children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years.

The school is not the only thing that she does in the community.  She runs a feeding scheme from the creche for 15 granny headed households where the parents have died and the grannies can’t get government grants because they can’t get ID documents (one of the households she feeds has a granny with 8 kids).  She also fosters 8 children at her house and she can’t get grants for them either.

It’s pity the school was closed for our visit, but she said that because most of the parents don’t work at Christmas time, she can’t get paid at all; so she doesn’t have the money to run the school and feed everyone once a day for this month.  And she needs to have the buildings repaired over this time too, as the kids have broken windows and there’s a lot of damp on the walls of the one classroom.  Let me take you on a tour:

This building built by FNB houses the kitchen, and then a room which serves as an office, sickroom and the guard room (there’s a guard that sleeps there at night), and also a room which is the nursery for 12 babies.

The office block and kitchen and nursery building

This classroom is the older kids class.  There are 35 kids in that class

Turn talk into action

This room serves as an office, a sickroom and at night it’s transformed into a guard house where the guard sleeps

Other than the 2 yellow buildings, and the loos, and one prefab building that serves as another classroom; all the other buildings on the premises are shacks that have been built as classrooms or storage rooms.

And finally her amazing veggie garden which stretched the length of the property.  She feeds all the children (and she teaches them how to grow them) and the feeding scheme households with her veggies.  She picked some spinach for my colleagues to take home.

These kids arrived while we were leaving, and were hoping for a bite to eat.  As you can see by the clothes, it was a crazy cold day today.. which is mad considering it’s the middle of summer.

And that’s it… I’m going to make a plan to get there when the school opens again next year to see this place alive.
