69/365 – a walk in the park

I went out at lunchtime today to the James and Ethel Gray Park close to Melrose Arch.  It was a scouting expedition for a new park to use as a photo venue.  My photos from my excursion are a mish-mash of styles today, and I only used my 50mm f1.8 lens.  This time, even though I could seriously have done with a macro lens, I’m quite pleased with the results especially the more arty photos that the lens allowed me to take.

And how awesome is the first one, considering I wasn’t using a zoom lens. This dragonfly perched on the flower for ages quite still while I got my shot!

And lastly, the view of part of the city of  Johannesburg from the top of the hill

And I’ve only realised now, after doing some research on the park, that there’s a memorial somewhere in it… it must be amongst the trees at the bottom of the hill somewhere.  Think I’ll have to go back again some day.

I opened up your blog and the photo of the dragonfly literally took my breath away! I also love the 2nd last shot of the flower.

Fiona - March 12, 2010 - 2:50 pm

Love love love the 1st one! Very impressive Jeanette. I also really like the rest especially the grass one ~ the affect you using is really nice.

Firefly (3 comments.) - March 12, 2010 - 2:37 pm

In the couple of times I have been to Johannesburg I haven’t yet had the opportunity or the location to take a nice skyline pic of the city. This looks like a good spot.

Thomas (3 comments.) - March 12, 2010 - 1:14 pm

I really like the texture of the bark, works well in black and white.

Michelle - March 12, 2010 - 8:51 am

Carole (14 comments.) - March 12, 2010 - 1:18 am

Stunning photos Jeanette, different from your usual but very much the same professional quality. I love the textures of the trees bark and the dof of the insect and flowers.

67/365 – I heart autumn

My silver birch trees are always the first to change into their autumn colours, and it was the first time I’ve noticed the shape of the leaves!  My next lens HAS to be a macro lens so I can do them proper justice, but the 50mm f1.8 did it’s magic this evening;)

So beautiful! I can’t wait to find a reason to get a macro lens myself. =)

Janet B (55 comments.) - March 10, 2010 - 1:12 pm

I’m afraid summer is on its way out! Love the leaf!

that’s so pretty jeanette

you’ll really love the 100mm 2.8

A quiet day at home

The party we’d planned on going to yesterday was cancelled due to the grotty weather, so I ended up having a free day… the first one in absolute ages.  And today is no different actually, both photoshoots have been postponed.

These photos were all taken in the kitchen during the course of the day.

Connor jumbled a few magnetic letters together on the fridge, and I liked the shape they made

Jumble of letters

The BIG news of the week was Bradley losing his second tooth…

Tooth missing

There’s nothing like a drop of Cape Velvet to warm a tummy on a chilly evening;)

Cape Velvet

Awww…

End of a long day

And finally Bradley trying to make his eyes squint

No idea what hes doing

Love the alphabet letters. And English Toffee Cream sounds delicious :)

Cortney @ evanhaslanded (5 comments.) - November 22, 2009 - 7:28 pm

Love the letters. Just something about all the colors and a little bit of innocence of the kiddos that play with them :-) ! I think I could go for a shot of that Cape Velvet – yummy! And the boys are just too cute! Congrats to Bradley on his accomplishment.

WackyMummy (30 comments.) - November 22, 2009 - 3:25 pm

Love the faces. =)

Tara R. (58 comments.) - November 22, 2009 - 9:24 am

I was trying to find a hidden message in the letters too. I also wish my frig was that clean.

Love the black and whites. Your boys are adorable.

tanya (50 comments.) - November 22, 2009 - 9:17 am

love the one of bradleys missing tooth – he is SUCH a gorgeous boy – heartbreaker in the making!!

Kelley @ Magnetoboldtoo (35 comments.) - November 22, 2009 - 8:33 am

mmmmmm, English Toffee Creme sounds AWESOME!

I wonder if they sell it here…

Denise (5 comments.) - November 22, 2009 - 8:23 am

The alphabet magnets… I want to try to find some word in it! Love the haphazard manner they have. Also, I really like the extreme close-ups. They’re so striking… especially in black & White. Something I need to try more often.

Textured Simplicity

My roses are finally blooming in my garden.  I love this rose called Simplicity, it’s so very easy to get a good-ish shot… but this time I felt it was too boring, so I added a texture

Simplicity texture

I’ve got such a hectic weekend planned, with Connor’s school concert tomorrow morning, then the “Blogging Chicks United” in the afternoon, and rounding off the weekend with a batmitzvah on Sunday. I’m going to be exhausted… but the photos I get will be worth it;)Prepare to be bombarded for the next few days!

Kathy - October 17, 2009 - 8:29 am

Lovely photo. Enjoy your busy weekend!!

Gilz (177 comments.) - October 17, 2009 - 5:03 am

Such a pretty rose…enjoy your busy weekend.

A stick or an insect?

Bradley spotted this tiny little creature on our wall… isn’t it incredible! I’ve never seen one in our garden before… or rather, I’ve never noticed it.  The camouflaged markings on this insect is incredible!

As far as the photo is concerned, it’s not that bad considering I don’t have a macro lens, and this was taken with my 24-70mm Sigma lens at f2.8.  When I try take photos like this, then I realise that I seriously need to invest in a proper dinkum macro lens or a macro attachment at least!

Stick insect

I love love love stick bugs. what a fun find, and a fabulous shot. :)

Tanya (86 comments.) - October 15, 2009 - 9:32 pm

Kim (78 comments.) - October 15, 2009 - 4:22 pm

How creepy and cool .. I would have ran the other way though..hahahaI am such a girl.

Kat Forsyth (4 comments.) - October 15, 2009 - 3:24 pm

He’s adorable! We used to see them sometimes at my parents’ house, but I haven’t seen one for years. I love those little guys, and praying mantis’ as well – looks like they’re in the same family.

Janet B - October 15, 2009 - 8:13 am

We get them at home quite often. They are funny looking things. I think this is a good shot!

Firefly (284 comments.) - October 15, 2009 - 7:40 am

I saw one a little while back, but was very disappointed with the pics I got. I like your better. My advanced compact camera’s build in macro lense is a blessing cause I like taking these kind of pics.

Annie (29 comments.) - October 15, 2009 - 7:12 am

Cool pic – I have seen one before or let me rephrase grabbed one when I was reaching for a knife. OMW did it give me a fright! Fortunately my son was around to catch it.

Marian (14 comments.) - October 15, 2009 - 2:59 am

That’s a pretty cool insect…..I have heard of them but never seen one before…great shot Jeanette! :)

Angel (192 comments.) - October 14, 2009 - 10:56 pm

I haven’t often seen those types of mantises, but they are beautiful! You should try and get a close up look at the markings on a daddy-long-legs or a brown widow spider, exquisite!
