I was amazed at how close I managed to get to this monarch butterfly without it flying away.  I used my 24-70mm f2.8 lens (priarily because it has a built in macro function).  Looking at the photos now though, I can see they would not get me very far in any kind of photo contest… the legs and antenae are not completely in focus… but hey, I still like them

I went out at lunchtime today to the James and Ethel Gray Park close to Melrose Arch.  It was a scouting expedition for a new park to use as a photo venue.  My photos from my excursion are a mish-mash of styles today, and I only used my 50mm f1.8 lens.  This time, even though I could seriously have done with a macro lens, I’m quite pleased with the results especially the more arty photos that the lens allowed me to take.

And how awesome is the first one, considering I wasn’t using a zoom lens. This dragonfly perched on the flower for ages quite still while I got my shot!



And lastly, the view of part of the city of  Johannesburg from the top of the hill

And I’ve only realised now, after doing some research on the park, that there’s a memorial somewhere in it… it must be amongst the trees at the bottom of the hill somewhere.  Think I’ll have to go back again some day.
