Next week is Earth Day… on the 22nd to be precise… which happens to be the same day as the South African elections. So you SA guys have no excuse, it’s a public holiday… you can take photos!
A couple of people I know have put together a website called Earthmosaic.
It’s a VERY exciting project that I’m DEFINITELY going to be a part of next week, and so should you all! They’re looking for everyone in the WORLD that has a camera (not pro’s or anything) to take photos from across the world on Earth Day.
The photos need to be loaded onto the Earthmosaic website before the end of April, and they’ll be creating a mosaic linked to. The image will be placed on a map showing where it was taken (from what I understand on the site).
Join in, by joining the Flickr group or the Facebook group and then loading your photos
It’s as easy as that. We must try get people from across the world to join in… including Sarah in Uganda… would be great to have more African photos (not just from SA)!!
And as for the rest of my worldly blog readers… I hope you’re going to join in too!! Let me know in the comments, and I’ll be sure to visit your blog or facebook page or Flickr page and look at your photos you’re submitting.
… and have FUN!!
We took the kids to Ushaka in Durban to see the aquarium and dolphin show on one of the non-beach days this week (it was too cold). As soon as I saw this sign, I knew this would be my post for today
The shark tank
… and the dolphins. This is always my favourite part

I had considered using this as my sign post too. The whole aim behind the show is environmental awareness.
We took the boys to the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve in Kromdraai this afternoon. It’s a privately owned game reserve that also has some exotic animals in an area close to the restaurant (ie tigers). As you can expect most of the animals are also free roaming apart from the tigers.
The warthog patrolling the entrance to the lion enclosure… which was VAST and we got warned to drive off fast if the lions came close to the cars because they like to chew on the tyres apparently

I spotted some kids playing and some people walking dogs in the veld today as I drove past, so I decided to stop and take some photos. I used to play in this spot when I was a child…. when it much safer to let your kids go walking down the streets. I used to love sitting on the rocks in the river and just daydream.

Even though the resident association has cleaned it up and ensure that the municipality cuts the grass etc, I’m not sure I’d let my kids play here without supervision. There are a lot more people walking dogs in the area now, and taking walks down paths through the veld, but I still don’t think it’s safe enough for kids.
I was very surprised to see these kids playing. They chatted to me for a while and asked me why I was taking photos. I told them about my photo-a-day thing, and then said that I played there as a child which is why I wanted to take photos of the area. The one boy then told me that they go to the Afterschool centre across the road, but the garden is too small, and they wanted to play in the “free world” so they walked out to play in the veld. OMW! I wouldn’t be very happy if I were their parents and their carers just let them play in the veld!!
