My Grandpa Roy died this morning in Hermanus.

I’m so sad that I didn’t get to see him again, but I’m so thankful that I took the boys to see him a few months ago.

He was such a special man, and I will always remember his laugh.  When he laughed his whole body moved, and his shoulders used to rise up and down as he chucked in his deep voice.  One of the other little things I’ll always remember is his endless crossword puzzles that he liked doing.  He was so good at them, and never stopped trying to do them.  He always had a dictionery next to his chair when they lived in Joburg. One of his “gifts” to me is my love of crosswords and word games.

This photo has to be the most special photo that I’ve taken ever.  Connor took a liking to Grandpa Roy the day that we spent with them, and they were sharing a bowl of chips.

It was quite amazing to watch them connect.  At the time, Connor couldn’t speak at all, and my grandpa struggled enormously to talk, so they had a silent “conversation” over a bowl of chips.

My dad was telling me this afternoon, that when he phoned Grandpa Roy’s sister in Harare this morning, she told him that she’d been dreading the call.  Aunty Lucette said that my Grandfather’s grandmother, mother, and brother died a few days before Christmas too, and she had a feeling that she was going to get the call soon.

May you Rest in Peace Grandpa.
