Watching him swim
By Jeanette on Nov 21, 2008 in Uncategorized
Bradley had an swimming open day at school today so that the moms could watch. I’m so glad I went. One of the reasons I went was so that I could see how they taught him so that I could do the same at home.
Those of you who read my other blog, would know that he had a near drowning incident when he was 3, and since then he’s been far too scared to even try and swim without arm bands. It’s only been in the last month, when I refused to let him use the arm bands at home; and bought the same swimming aids as he uses at school that he’s finally started to get over his fear.
I was SO SO proud of him today. I was amazed that he let his teacher make him float on his back… he NEVER lets me do that. He even did semi-dives into the pool from a seated position on the edge, and then swam doggy paddle style across the width of the pool… without any help from the teacher or any aids! It’s such a pity that those photos are not very clear (the teacher was in the way), but I have these photos…

We took Dylan for swimming lessons as a baby and that has actually made him afraid of the water. Although he loves the swimming pool, he wouldn’t go in without his tube on. We are trying hard and hopefully this summer will be the turning point.

I took my son to 3 swim lessons and only in the 3rd he started to open up and started to learn, the two lessons before he was not participating anything, he refused to do anything….it just takes time and a lot of patience. Today he is a great swimmer and is teaching his two little boys (5 and 3).
Bradley will do fine!

Oh how wonderful! I think one of the greatest gifts you can give your child is to teach him to swim - well done, Bradley!

Fantastic!! So glad he’s getting over his fear. I go swimming w/ Squidge every week and absolutely love it. She categorically refuses to float on her back though! I’m hoping she outgrows it and seeing Bradley floating gives me hope!!

That is wonderful! Floating on your back can be scary. I know I was terrified to do it as a child, and probably would feel uneasy now as an adult. He looks like he’s having a ball
