I took Elaine and Bryan to a ruin that I found in Muldersdrift today for some photos, as a practise shoot. We had loads of fun exploring the old house, and we ended up really filthy.
What I learnt today…
1. Wear closed shoes when doing a photo shoot in the veld.
2. Use a smaller lens. I should have stuck to the 18-55mm lens or the 50mm lens rather than trying to be clever, because it was late afternoon and the quality of the shots weren’t brilliant with the big zoom.
3. Learn more about poses. LOL, they kept asking me what they should do, and I was just blank!! LOL! I should have been more prepared. I’ve read lots of stuff re poses etc, but I should have read them again.

these are really some neat shots!
blog hopping…
Congrats! I think you have superb shots, with or without posing guidelines
Looking forward to seeing your next shoot and the location was perfect.

I like the first pic best. Your sis has grown into such a beautiful woman and brainy to boot! What a catch
Looks so much like your mom. I take it Bryan is her boyfriend (I don’t know about him)? I think couples shots are hard. When Brian and I did ours, it took many, many shots to get anything remotely decent and in fact it was the non-planned one that trumped in the end.
Love the setting! Not too keen on black and white tho’, which is strange, ‘cos when I was younger I thought B&W was just the bees knees. Now I like antique or sepia best.
The last one would have been my fav, if Bryan had been looking towards the camera, like Elaine.
Love the idea of the walking hand in hand, yet something about them feels “lost”…dunno…don’t know the technical terms, but somehow I feel they as a couple need more emphasis in the shot.
Well done for your first attempt!
Nice job! They are lovely, natural looking portraits.

They are great.. For the one of your sister alone…I would have had her stand straight with her arm about her head and not looking at the camera? Does that make sense? That picture has some white space to it that could be filled with a gaze. Otherwise, the other ones are GREAT!!
Cute shoot, love the lighting:)

Now I am remembering your photo side from Photo Story Friday and the Lion. Your “people” shots are wonderful. My favorite it the one a few posts back of the child and his grandpa!!

Wow, Jeanette, well done! I love the second one. It’s wonderful that you are able to list the things that you have learned from this shoot – I sometimes get so fed up when things aren’t right, that I just blame the camera (LOL!!). Then it takes me weeks to figure out what really went wrong. I also love the location!

I love the second and third photos! Well done for your first couples photo shoot. Have you taken a quick look around flickr- just a thought for some inspiration!

Good job. In my photography, I find posing the hardest thing too. I mostly take children’s photographs and those are more spontaneous, candid shots, but when I have to pose people I get stumped on how to pose them. I do lots of research by looking at other’s ideas online.

I think you have taken some great shots Jeanette. I especially like the second one – that is my best one
When I take photo’s for friends or family I just tell them to relax and talk to each other, I find that is when I get my best shots. I find when people pose they tense up and it often comes out as “posed” and not natural.
Well done though!!!

I think you did great. And excellent lessons too. I’m never very happy with the photos I get with my 28-300. I love my 50 and my 85 best. Poses are definitely something I need to study up on too. I’m quickly realizing that photoshoots are more about my ability to “direct” subjects than to take photos. In which case, I have a doubly long way to go!
Love #3 the best. I’m all over hand-holding shots!!

Poses… don’t pose them. Let them be natural. Have them talk to each other, whisper things to each other… you are the fly on the wall and they should not really be aware of you.
(It’s what I’ve learned in wedding photography). The wedding photographer I work with actually likes the longer lens (70-300) and I do too.. because you can still get in their face without actually being in their space!!
These pictures are awesome!
